Abstract
The talk will focus on a recent initiative within the Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory at Harwell, Oxford (STFC-RAL), to use artificial intelligence, particularly the machine learning techniques, for solving some of the challenging problems in different branches of sciences. The talk will discuss a number of problems stemming from big scientific data generated by various facilities, on going activities at RAL on this space, and our vision for the future in this area.
Biography of the Speaker
Dr. Jeyan Thiyagalingam received his PhD degree in Computer Science from Imperial College, London, in 2005. Currently, he is a Senior Scientist at the Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (STFC-RAL) in Harwell, Oxford, UK, and deputy group leader of the scientific machine learning group at STFC-RAL. Before joining STFC-RAL, he was an academic at the University of Liverpool, and previously held positions at MathWorks UK and at the University of Oxford. His research interests include application and development of machine learning and signal processing methods for solving fundamental problems in science, computationally efficient algorithms and hybrid techniques. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and also a member of IET and IEEE.)
